NEWS & ACTIVITIES FROM THE UPTOWN FAYETTEVILLE DISTRICT & MORE...

CROSSOVER ROAD EXPANSION PROJECT.

Perhaps the most impacting development on the Uptown District that's going on is the expansion project on Crossover Road. Currently, traffic lanes have been cut down to 2 lanes between Old Wire Road & Birdie Drive, eliminating the center turning lane. The traffic interruption is necessary to put in some massive rain water drains at the base of the soon-to-come 4-lane road. Motorists traveling along this North-South corridor can expect this interruption to last until August 2012, according to the state's Highway Department. The road expansion will create 5 lanes from Mission Boulevard to Township Street, which includes a center turning lane. Then from Township Street to Joyce Boulevard, there will be 4 lanes with a raised median, similar to the recently built Don Tyson Parkway in Springdale. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2013.

LIBERTY BANK ADDING TO THE LINE-UP OF FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS...

The short stretch of road on Joyce Boulevard between Vantage Drive and Front Street is quickly turning into Fayetteville's very own financial district! Liberty Bank of Arkansas recently held a "Ground-Breaking" ceremony to officially begin construction on a 22,000 square-foot banking center at the intersection of Vantage Drive and Joyce Boulevard, sandwiched between the US Post Office to the East & Masons to the West. The addition of Liberty Bank to this intersection will up the ante of financial institutions with a strong presence operating within 500 yards of each other. Two other "big building" banks currently operating are - Regions Bank, which also houses Morgan Keegan & Co., and First Security Bank. In all, there will be 13 financial institutions with operations along the 2.2-mile Joyce Boulevard corridor, including Arvest Bank, Bank of America, Delta Trust Bank, Metropolitan National Bank, Signature Bank at the corner of Crossover Road & Joyce Boulevard, and Raymond James Financial also operating in the Signature Bank building.

THE FORMER CIRCUIT CITY BUILDING IS GETTING A NEW TENANT...

Some 3 weeks back, activity was detected at the former Circuit City building, next door to Walgreen's on Joyce Boulevard. Our friends at the Fayetteville Flyer reported that the group behind all the commotion is Mattress Firm, which sells... well, mattresses (and other bedding stuff we imagine). The franchise-based company is headquartered in Houston, Texas with franchise operations in 14 cities across 11 states. The nearest Mattress Firm store is in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The store on Joyce Boulevard will be the first in Arkansas. The specifics of the product selections (other than mattresses...) is not known, and their website does not indicate either. But we anticipate the typical format of most other bedding furniture retail outlets. Customers are able to shop online as well.

According to their website, 100% of their focus is on cupcakes... perfect cupcakes. HAS THE ARKANSAS MUSIC PAVILION MOVED FROM THE MALL FOR GOOD?

It seems it's official folks... according to a very credible source, the Arkansas Music Pavilion [the AMP] may have permanently pulled the plug on the seasonal outdoor event center at the southwest parking lot of the Northwest Arkansas Mall. The AMP first began operating at the mall in 2005, and has hosted an array of renowned artists from around the world. The popular event center was purchased by the Walton Arts Center in 2011, and plans were announced in September 2011 to build a permanent structure in the same space - just outside JC Penney [read it here]. Then the mall came under new management late last year. Bayer Properties of Birmingham, Alabama took over management of the 40 year old retail center (see 40th anniversary piece below) from Midwest Malls & Urban Retail Properties. The AMP has set up shop at the Washington County Fairgrounds, just off Garland Avenue (Hwy 112), and is scheduled to open the 2012 season on April 19th with CAKE. Other notable acts in the 2012 lineup include, Hank Williams Jr., Five Finger Death Punch, and Ted Nugent. See the full 2012 schedule at the AMP here.

MEIJI JAPANESE CUISINE TAKES ON ADDED SPACE, FULL BAR & OUTDOOR PATIO.

Sushi aficionado's... rejoice!!! Meiji Japanese Cuisine - in Signature Plaza, at the corner of Joyce Boulevard and Crossover Road, next to Signature Bank, Spiedini, and Tropical Smoothie Cafe, across from the White Oak Station (hopefully, ALL our reference points paint a clear picture of where it is...) - is expanding. The intimate specialty restaurant will fill the space previously occupied by "My Friends Closet," a local resale boutique that relocated to the Kantz Retail Center at Mission Boulevard & Crossover Road in Fayetteville. Meiji opened in the retail center in 2010 and gained quick momentum as a popular sushi joint. This expansion, which includes an outdoor patio will provide some much needed space as the restaurant had very limited seating. Also to come with the added space is a full bar to enhance the dining experience. Meiji is known for using locally grown products in its tasty meal selections. So with Fayetteville's Farmers Market opening up on April 7th, there's much to look forward to at Meiji with added space, outdoor seating, great food, more beverages, and an overall exciting dining experience!

THE TILTED KILT BRINGS ITS ENTERTAINMENT FLARE TO UPTOWN FAYETTEVILLE...

The Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery on Mall Avenue will be the first in the State of Arkansas. This Celtic-themed diner is one of several national brands taking on market-dominant giant, Hooter's in the dining entertainment niche. A similar restaurant just across the street from the Tilted Kilt, Northern Exposure, attempted to tap into this market niche, but was unable to maintain the drive to keep it going and closed it's doors recently. The Tilted Kilt promises to offer a very different dining experience, regardless of the theme and your thoughts on it. Their website states that there are five things you will always find when you walk in the door: ice cold beer, a great food menu, an extensive selection of sports entertainment, a festive and exciting atmosphere, and "attractive cast members" to make your visit that much more better. NHMG was granted a full sneak peak at the soon-to-open restaurant... and folks, we can confirm that 3 of the 5 things listed above are already in place! With 35+ huge television screens - 13 of which are right above the bar alone! - the claim of an extensive selection of sports entertainment is not a joke! There will be more than 20 brews on tap, and the meal options will satisfy every palate with selections like fish 'n chips, the black & bleu burger, wings, Irish stew, & much more! With other restaurants like Shogun, Louie's, Mojito's, Noodles, and Posta Plata already in place, we look forward to the Tilted Kilt adding to this list of entertainment option restaurant-bars that enhance the nightlife at UPTOWN Fayetteville! Doors open on Monday, April 9th.

3 MONKEYS CHILDRENS BOUTIQUE IS NOW OPEN IN UPTOWN FAYETTEVILLE!

The building previously occupied by El Chico's restaurant, which has sat empty since 2009 now has a tenant... and it is not another restaurant. 3 Monkey's Children's Boutique has taken over this space and added its own unqiue touches to draw the appeal of customers and remove the stigma of being an old restaurant building. The retail boutique previously operated in the Shoppes at Pinnacle Hills retail center in Rogers. That location closed as the store in UPTOWN Fayetteville opened. 3 Monkeys carries an assortment of mid-to high end clothing and accessories for children, including selections by brands like Toms shoes, Dior & Baby Dior, True Religion, Little Marc Jacobs, Uggs, and many more. The store promises an exceptional shopping experience and even offers online shopping. With summer just around the corner, it may be time to get some fun new outfits for the little one's! Schedule a trip to 3 Monkeys today... you can't miss 'em! It's the big yellow building visible from College Avenue, and accessible from Joyce Boulevard or Milsap Road.

The little commercial strip across the street from Bank of America on Joyce Boulevard, formerly occupied by Lender's Title Company, recently received a slight facelift... and is now occupied by Carpet One. The flooring retail establishment was previously located just down the road at 2890 North College Avenue, immediately southeast of Fiesta Square. The store on Joyce Boulevard has since opened and is operating.
